Stretching 193 km from Baidicheng (White Emperor Temple) in Fengjie, Chongqing in the west, to Nanjinguan in Yichang, Hubei in the east, the Three Gorges consist of Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge, and Xiling Gorge, which, together with many scenic spots and historical sites on riversides, some tributaries of Yangtze River, and the Sanxia Da Ba (Three Gorges Dam) constitute the Three Gorges Scenic Area.

Famous scenic spots in the Three Gorges Scenic Area include Baidicheng (White Emperor Temple), Qutang Gorge, Daning River and Mini Three Gorges (Xiao Sanxia), Wu Gorge, Shennong Stream, Xiling Gorge, Three Gorges Dam, etc.

Qutang Gorge
Extending from Baidicheng (White Emperor Temple) in the west to the town of Daxizhen in the east, Qutang Gorge, with a distance of 8 km, is the shortest, but most dramatic on of the three gorges. Qutang Gorge is also known as Kuixia Gorge. The broadest part of the gorge is only 150 m while the narrowest is less than 100 m, with two perpendicular peaks of more than 1,000 m high facing each other on the banks. The turbulent waters flowing in the deep gorge along a continuous line of peaks make a most magnificent picture.

Wu Gorge
Wu Gorge is the most charming and exquisite part of three gorges. With a distance of 44 km, Wu Gorge stretches from the mouth of Daning River in Wushan County, Chongqing in the west to Guandukou in Badong County, Hubei Province in the east. The gorge is known for its deep valleys and beautiful scenes on both banks. As the river cuts through the Wushan Mountains, the roaring currents change their directions constantly. Traveling through the gorge on a boat, you may often find the way blocked by mountains. But a sharp turn will bring you a entirely different scene. Cruising down the Wu Gorge, you can enjoy the beauty of 12 peaks on bank banks. Six line in the northern bank and six in the southern bank. All the peaks derived their names from their different shapes.

Xiling Gorge
Stretching from the Xiangxi stream in Badong County in the west to the Nanjin Pass in Yichang in the east with a distance of about 76km, Xiling Gorge is the longest and difficult one of the three gorges to pass on the Yangtze River. The channel in Xiling Gorge is full of shoals, whirling pools and submerged reefs, making the water run in different directions. Tourist attractions include “Tactics Books and Sword Gorge”, “Shadow Play Gorge”, “Sanyou Cave”, etc.

Baidicheng (White Emperor Temple)
Lying on the north bank of the Yangtze River and to the east of Fengjie County, and guarding the entrance to Qutang Gorge, Baidicheng (White Emperor Temple) is, in fact, a mini peninsular town with some temples and gates on top of Baidi Hill. As the legend goes, the White Emperor Town was founded by Gongsun Shu, the ruler of the State of Shu in West Han Dynasty (206 B.C. to A.D. 24). Gongsun Shu renamed himself the White Emperor and the Town Baidicheng (White Emperor Town) after he saw a white dragon coming out of a well in the town. Later, a popular story happened in the town. Liu Bei, the King of Shu Kingdom in Three Kingdoms period, before he was dead, entrusted his state power and his son to Zhuge Liang, his Prime Minister and talented advisor. Wax statues in the temple describe the moment in 220 AD.

Because of its scenic beauty, many famous poets of Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) Dynasties visited the place and left numerous poems. That is why the White Emperor Town is also known as the poetic town. There are over 70 poems, carvings, and cultural relics of the Sui, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties well preserved in the town. Baidicheng (White Emperor Town) is a center of historical relics in the Three Gorges.

Daning River and Mini Three Gorges
The Daning River is a 300 km tributary that joins the Yangtze River at the mouth of the Wuxia Gorge. The Mini Three Gorges refers to the three separate valleys of the Daning River, namely "Longmen Xia (Dragon-Gate Gorge)", "Bawu Xia (Misty Gorge)" and "Dicui Xia (Emerald Gorge)". With sheer cliffs and steep mountains rising on both sides and turbulent currents smashing against the huge rocks, the three small gorges are in many ways like those of the Yangtze River Gorges, hence its name the Mini Three Gorges. The Mini Three Gorges is situated on a much smaller river; as a result, only passenger boats can make their way up the narrow gorges. The subtle mountains, clear waters, pretty rocks, dangerous rapids, sharp turns, fantastic caves, and stalactites in various shapes characterize the natural landscape in the Mini Three Gorges. Monkeys, mandarin ducks, water birds and fish can be seen in this area. In addition to the natural beauty, there are a number of historical places of interest along the way, such as hanging coffin, boat coffin, remains of ancient plank walkway. Mini Three Gorge area has been made one of the key nature reserves in China and has become a must-see for tourists cruising on the Yangtze River.

Breaking so many records in terms of size, manpower utilized in its construction, volume of building materials (including 10 million lb. of cement), and projected energy output (equal to "10 nuclear power stations"), the project site is really worth a visit. According to the plan, the project is designed to be built in three phases and is scheduled for completion in year 2009.
